Best SUVs for a Family of 6: Where Four Kids Actually Sit
The best SUV for a family of six is the one that gives four children four usable car-seat or booster positions, with the anchors and tethers each seat needs, in rows two and three. Seat count alone doesn’t tell you that. On Cars.com’s Car Seat Checks, the strongest picks for six are the 2026 Volkswagen Atlas and the 2026 Ford Expedition with a second-row bench, which fit three car seats across row two and leave the third row for the oldest. Among captain’s-chair SUVs, the 2027 Kia Telluride and 2026 Hyundai Palisade are the most flexible, with two lower-anchor sets in the third row. Below: the row-by-row numbers for six SUVs, and how to seat four kids in each.
All anchor counts and grades are from Cars.com Car Seat Checks, each loaded on October 7, 2026. They describe the exact trim Cars.com tested. A different trim or seat configuration of the same model can have a different layout.
The question a family of six has to answer
Two adults ride up front. That leaves four children for rows two and three, and every child under 13 belongs in the back. The American Academy of Pediatrics says “the safest place to ride for all children younger than 13 years is the back seat” (HealthyChildren).
So the job is four back-seat positions, and the second row can be laid out two ways:
- A second-row bench (three seats). Three kids across row two, one in row three. Needs a bench wide enough, with the anchors, for three car seats.
- Second-row captain’s chairs (two seats). Two kids in row two, two in row three. That makes the third row’s anchors, tethers and booster fit just as important as the second row’s.
Which layout suits you depends on how many kids are still in harnessed seats. The third-row car seat rules cover why row three is usually the booster row, and why that isn’t always possible.
Six three-row SUVs, row by row
| SUV (trim tested) | Row 2 layout | Row 2: lower-anchor sets / tethers | Row 3: lower-anchor sets / tethers | Three across in row 2? | Row 3 booster grade |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 Volkswagen Atlas (Peak Edition) | Bench, seats 7 | 3 / 3 | 0 / 2 | Yes | A |
| 2026 Ford Expedition (Tremor) | Bench, seats 8 | 3 / 3 | 2 / 3 | Yes | C |
| 2024 Honda Pilot (TrailSport; bench also tested) | Captain’s chairs or bench | 2 / 2 (chairs); 3 / 3 (bench) | 1 / 3 | Yes, bench version | C |
| 2027 Kia Telluride (X-Pro SX-Prestige) | Captain’s chairs, seats 7 | 2 / 2 | 2 / 3 | No | C |
| 2026 Hyundai Palisade (Calligraphy) | Captain’s chairs, seats 7 | 2 / 2 | 2 / 3 | No | C |
| 2026 Chevrolet Traverse (LT) | Captain’s chairs, seats 7 | 2 / 2 | 0 / not stated | No | C |

The pattern is clear. Three-across in row two only happens with a bench, and the third-row booster grade is a C almost everywhere, usually because a fixed head restraint pushes the booster off the seatback. The Atlas is the only one of the six where Cars.com gave the third-row booster an A.
SUV by SUV
2026 Volkswagen Atlas: the easiest fit for four
Tested with a second-row bench, the Atlas “fits three car seats across its second row bench seat.” Its second row has three sets of lower anchors and “three clearly marked top tether anchors.” The third row has no lower anchors, so seats install with the belt, but its two top tethers are “clearly marked and easy to use,” and both third-row seats earned an A.
Seating four kids: three across row two, or two in row two and two older kids in row three. The third row is the most booster-friendly of the six. The catch is space: the Atlas with a bench seats seven, and Cars.com “had to slide the second row forward a bit to share legroom” for the third-row tests.
2026 Ford Expedition with a second-row bench: the most positions
The tested Tremor seats eight, and “the three-row SUV’s second row fits three car seats.” It has the most install points of the six: three lower-anchor sets and three tethers in row two, and two lower-anchor sets and three tethers in row three.
The trade-offs are physical. The second-row anchors need “some muscle” to connect (LATCH graded B), the third-row booster scored a C, and “the step-in height on the Tremor trim is very tall so smaller kids will likely need help.” For a family of six with one or two older kids, it’s the most flexible vehicle here. For four kids under six, that climb happens at every school run.
2024 Honda Pilot: pick the bench
The Pilot comes with either captain’s chairs or a bench, and Cars.com tested both. With the bench there are three lower-anchor sets and three tethers, and “versions with the second-row bench seat can fit three car seats across.” The third row has “one set of lower anchors on the passenger side” and three tethers.
Third-row entry is good on both versions: “A button on the side of the captain’s chairs allows the seat to fold and slide forward hands-free.” But the third-row booster scored a C. “The seat cushions aren’t quite wide enough for the booster; the booster seat covered the buckle.” For six, buy the bench and keep boosters in row two.
2027 Kia Telluride: the best captain’s-chair third row
The tested top trim has captain’s chairs, so it “does not fit three car seats across its second row.” It makes up for it in row three: “two sets of lower anchors and three top tether anchors. All anchors are well marked and exposed.” Two lower-anchor sets in the third row is what you need to put two harnessed seats back there without belt installs.
The third-row booster still scored a C. “The middle seat is very narrow, and the seatbelt comes down from the ceiling, blocking the driver’s view.” Seating four kids: two harnessed seats in row two, two forward-facing harnessed seats in row three. Boosters go in row two.
2026 Hyundai Palisade: same layout, and a recall to check
The Palisade’s layout mirrors the Telluride’s: captain’s chairs in the tested Calligraphy trim, two lower-anchor sets and two tethers in row two, and in row three “two sets of lower anchors … three top tether anchors.” The third-row booster scored a C.
Before buying a 2026 Palisade, check the recall. Hyundai suspended sales of 2026 Palisade Limited and Calligraphy trims because “the second- and third-row power seats may not properly detect contact with a person or object in some situations,” after a young child died (KTVU/FOX, March 2026). Cars.com’s check notes that “a fix is now available.” For any used or new 2026 Palisade, have the dealer confirm the recall repair is done on that VIN. In a house with small kids around power-folding seats, that’s not optional.
2026 Chevrolet Traverse: great second row, belt-only third row
The Traverse’s second row is strong, with two exposed lower-anchor sets and tethers “clearly marked and easy to use.” Cars.com’s tested LT had captain’s chairs: “ample room for two car seats, but it does not fit three.” The third row has no lower anchors, so every seat back there is a belt install, and the third-row booster scored a C. Access is the bright spot: “There’s also a space between the captain’s chairs that allows access to the third row.”
Seating four kids: works best with two harnessed seats in row two and two older, belt-capable kids in row three.
Matching an SUV to your four kids
| Your four kids | Look for |
|---|---|
| Two or more in rear-facing or harnessed seats | A second-row bench with three anchor sets (Atlas, Expedition, Pilot bench), or third-row lower anchors (Telluride, Palisade) |
| Two harnessed, two in boosters | Captain’s chairs work. Put the boosters where the buckles are usable, which is often row two. |
| Mostly boosters and belts | Third-row booster fit matters most. The Atlas is the only A here. |
| Kids under about five climbing in themselves | Watch the step-in height. The tested Expedition Tremor was “very tall.” |
Three-across in row two still depends on which seats you own. A narrow seat like the Diono Radian 3R is the usual way to make a tight bench work, but test your actual seats in the actual vehicle before you buy.
SUV or minivan for six?
For four kids, a minivan usually wins on access: sliding doors, a lower floor, and a third row you can reach. The SUV wins if you tow, need all-wheel drive, or want the higher ground clearance. The minivan side of the same row-by-row audit is in best minivans for families, and the head-to-head is in minivan vs SUV for big families.
If your family might grow, count again. Six seats with four kids leaves no room for a fifth child, or for the grandparent who comes on holidays. The 8-passenger vs 7-passenger breakdown is worth reading before you buy.
The test-drive checklist
- Bring every car seat and booster you own. Install all four, in the rows you’d actually use.
- Count anchors by row, not by vehicle. Lower-anchor sets and tethers are separate inventories.
- Try the third-row access with a car seat installed in row two. Find out whether the seat you’d tilt for access still moves.
- Have each kid buckle their own booster. Buckle stalks decide whether that happens.
- Check the recall status by VIN on any vehicle, new or used.
FAQ: SUVs for a family of six
What size SUV do I need for a family of six?
A three-row SUV with at least seven seats. Two adults up front leaves four kids for rows two and three, and a seven-seater gives you one spare seat. Where that spare sits, row two or row three, depends on whether the second row is a bench or captain’s chairs.
Can a family of six fit in a 7-seat SUV?
Yes. Two adults up front, two kids in the second row and two in the third works in a captain’s-chair SUV, as long as the third row has the anchors or belt fit your kids’ seats need.
Which three-row SUV fits three car seats across?
Of those checked here, the 2026 Volkswagen Atlas and 2026 Ford Expedition with a bench, and the 2024 Honda Pilot with its bench, fit three car seats across row two. Captain’s-chair versions don’t.
Is the third row safe for car seats?
It can be, if the seat installs tightly with the belt or lower anchors and the tether can be used. The AAP’s rule is to install wherever you can get a tight install. Check the anchor count for the exact trim.
